Wesley Goodenough holds a Masters in Social Work and a Masters in Business Administration from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He has worked in the fields of domestic violence perpetrator intervention and substance abuse treatment since 1997.  His primary training in perpetrator intervention was through the Domestic Violence Intervention Project of Duluth, Minnesota.

He recently served as a member of ACADV’s committee charged with revising the Alabama Minimum Standards for Domestic Violence Intervention Programs.

He was president of the Alabama Association of Violence Intervention Programs from 2002 through 2005, and has been a program representative and committee chair with AAVIP since 2000. Mr. Goodenough enjoys living near his two daughters, son-in-law, and four grandchildren in Birmingham.

Victim-Centered Advocacy Experience

For over seven years as Director of the Gateway Violence Intervention Program I have been continuously involved with victims advocacy. Victim safety is always the first priority in the field of domestic violence. GVIP operates in collaboration with, and accountable to, the Family Violence Center, providing perpetrator intervention classes. I have held our program accountable to victims and advocacy programs for:

  1. report status and participation of perpetrators to advocates, shelter programs, and courts,
  2. monitor and perpetrator compliance with court orders, including no-contact orders,
  3. inform victims of perpetrator enrollment and status,
  4. warn victims that participation in the program cannot assure that the perpetrator will change behavior,
  5. provide victims with basic information about the nature of abuse, recommend steps for personal safety, and refer them to victims advocates,
  6. maintain all victim communication confidential, especially from the perpetrator/client,
  7. Collaborate wherever possible with the programs and activities of the Family Violence Center, including:
    1. efforts to establish CCRs in various communities,
    2. cross-training with advocates, and
    3. collaborate with advocates processing clients in court cases.
Current CCR involvement:I have been honored to be able to play a role in a county-wide collaborative to establish a CCR in our community, currently as Co-Chair of the nascent Jefferson County Family Violence Coordinated Community Response.
